How to Cross-Pollinate Audiences

In this edition of Voics Voices, I’ll be walking through how you can cross-pollinate audiences with your podcast.

Podcasting is a relationships game.

Fail to build relationships, fail to build a podcast.

But if you shake the right hand, your life (and business) might change forever.

Beyond the network opportunities, there’s the network effect between audiences.

When you’re looking at audience size and retention, this is the difference between “making it” and being a starving artist.

The reason being is that as you build your podcast, you should be able to tap into the guests audience.

I refer to this as “cross-pollinating” between audiences. You’re stacking more leverage from other audiences. It’s a crucial element of virality as you’re teaming up for supernormal growth.

Why?

A clear, strong alignment between your podcast and the guests.

Yet, this all breaks down if the alignment is wrong. Something doesn’t quite add up…

Once the alignment is correct, it’s crucial you set your podcast up for takeoff.

The following steps can help you tap into new audiences and leave the dark days of 10 downloads per week behind:

  1. Design

Like it or not, if your episodes look like shit, guests will not be interested to engage with your work.

Take this as a simple case study by myself: I spent one year using Zoom with $5 thumbnails from Fiverr.

Not pretty.

Think about it, If you consider yourself a professional, your episode should be designed professionally.

Clear colour scheme, font style, consistent layout of thumbnails, covers and videos. It sounds basic (because it is). Yet, we overlook this in the hunt for ‘better’ guests.

Take a step back and ask yourself, “If I wasn’t me, would I share this?”

If the answer is a resounding no, then it’s time for a little upgrade.

Give people a reason to engage.

2. Show Notes

Show notes are incredibly underrated.

You have a FREE opportunity to drive continuous traffic to your episodes years from now. Yet, 99% of podcast hosts get it horribly wrong. I created the “who, what, why” strategy to keep it simple:

- Who is the guest?

- What is discussed?

- Why should I hit play?

Well-designed show notes will drive traffic organically when someone searches for the guest’s name in Google. This works beautifully for authors. When people search for their book, your podcast pops right to the top.

3. Repurposed Content

People get frustrated when guests don’t share their content.

Why don’t they share it?

It doesn’t add value to their business or life.

It’s that simple.

When you’re repurposing content, focus on tangible benefits and outcomes the guest is solving.

Everything doesn’t have to be ROI driven, but at the very least, it must evoke an emotional reaction that people will enjoy.

4. Google Drive Sharing

After you publish an episode and create a bunch of thumbnails, clips etc, put everything together in a Google Drive to send to the guest.

The guest has FREE content to publish on their own. This is the ultimate form of network effects.

Once the content looks pretty and it helps viewers, it becomes a sweet deal to tap into new audiences.

You can sit back and chill, knowing your content is meeting fresh eyes.

That’s all for today’s newsletter. See you next week internet friends.
