How to Stand Out in a ‘Saturated’ Market

What’s up everyone,

This week I’m going to break down how you can stand out in a ‘saturated’ podcast industry.

If you stop anyone on the street, most people would say podcasting is saturated.

Probably because they see three or four of the same podcasts as everyone and think this must be a saturated industry.

Well, quite the opposite.

In under three years, I’ve been able to establish my podcast and many others, but sticking to 5 core fundamental principles.

This has allowed me to reach millions of people, make hundreds of thousands of dollars, and help thousands of people.

If this worked for me, it can work for you too.

Let’s dive right in.

1. Branding & Design

Your branding is your podcast.

When you think of Kickoff Sessions, you immediately think of black and gold.

It’s literally everywhere, and that’s intentional.

In a crowded space, I’ve stuck my head above the masses by hitting the same colour pattern, tonality, and theme through my branding and design.

This is step one of standing out.

The thing is, most people won’t listen to your work, and that’s fine. However, they will associate you with your work. That’s why it needs to be spot on.

Your design needs to follow your own personality. I love a clean, minimal design that’s dark. I ONLY wear black clothes and I pull that through my brand.

It’s a clear association.

Pick two to three colours, review colour pallets and stick to it.

Everything from cover art, thumbnails, Instagram stories and clips needs to hit the same pattern.

2. Unique Angle

You can be in the most generic industry possible, like ‘entrepreneurship’, but it’s the angle you take that’s important.

Kickoff Sessions has produced 160+ episodes on one core principle: help young people live a richer and more fulfilling life.

Each week it pulls in the perfect ideal listener, based on one core principle with guests that can smash it from multiple angles.

That stands out from everyone else.

This can’t be all fluff either. It needs to be real and genuine.

For me, I went through a rough period in my career where I had zero interest, fulfillment, and joy in what I was doing. I hope I’ve achieved my goal by helping people not have to go through what I did.

3. Own an Industry

It’s easy to get caught up in big number theory:

The bigger the number of downloads, the better.

But most times, it’s the opposite. You want to dominate a tiny slice of the internet.

Some of Voics clients are so niche that 1000 downloads a week, is more than enough to own a particular vertical. Example:

Don’t think business, think real estate

Don’t think real estate, think house flipping

Don’t think house flipping, think house flipping in Santa Monica, California

How many podcasts are there about housing flipping in Santa Monica? Not many, I bet.

The riches are in the niches.

4. Personal Experiences

My friend Tim Stoddart says: “I’m not here to give advice. All I have are my own personal experiences.”

Your experiences separate you from everyone else.

Your experiences make your podcast unique.

You can share the good, the bad and the ugly. If you’ve had some crazy wins, share it. You can help those who need the help.

The perfect example of this is Matt Kelly from The Midnight Pod. After his previous business failing, he’s able to convey the lessons incredibly well, which is super valuable for other founders. His audience is super engaged, and each episode pops off right after release. Pretty cool.

5. Production Quality

If everyone is doing the same stuff, do the exact opposite.

Coming out of lockdowns, I felt the whole remote recording game was dying. Listener retention was lower, watch time was down and overall views were substantially lower than in person podcasts.

Instead of complaining about it, I found the best possible studio I could.

That’s what made my content stand out. Since I started recording in ultra high quality, I’ve generated over 30 million views on my content across YouTube, Instagram and LinkedIn.

Why?

Because it stands out.

Sounds obvious, right?

Then I highly recommend you try it.

6. Bolt On Businesses (Bonus)

I find it strange when a podcast talks about a topic that they don’t have a business wrapped around, or at least work in that industry.

It’s like an unhealthy personal trainer or a chef that uses a microwave all the time.

Something just doesn’t add up…

Instead, a great way to stand out is to walk the talk. Actually, have something tangible to offer listeners besides your podcast.

Because when listeners like, know and trust you, they want to support you and you have clearly shown you’re an authority.

So build fast and combine your interests with products that will help your audience.

That’s all for today people!
