In this week’s newsletter I’m going to be breaking down how to break through a podcast plateau.
A plateau is when everything feels and looks the same, no matter what you do each week.
Podcasting can be ROUGH sometimes.
The hours are long, the downloads are low and you have a shit tonne of work to do.
On the other end of all the BS is the benefit of podcasting:
- Creating a super network
- Building trust with listeners
- Designing a business around you
Sometimes it can feel like whatever you do doesn’t quite get measurable results.
Well, in this newsletter I’m going to walk through how you can break through a plateau mentally and physically.
Yes, you heard me correctly.
There’s nothing more damaging to your momentum and podcast than taking a 3 month holiday. It leads to a big drop off in audience and your progress.
Instead, reduce your workload in areas you HATE.
If you don’t like scheduling, hire a VA.
If you don’t enjoy editing, stop editing so much.
If you don’t like marketing, schedule posts or outsource.
If you feel you’re producing a lot of content, scale it back.
Go from 4 episodes per month to 2.
Go from 6 clips per week to 2.
Go from 3 posts per week to 1.
When you slow down, you can become more focused.
2. Ruthlessly Analyse Your Content
You may have hit a plateau because you don’t know what direction to take.
When you look around you, it looks like everyone else is doing better than you.
I assure you they’re not, by the way.
Focus on your own content and trajectory.
Open up your episodes, clips and posts and sort by most viewed. Find the topics and guests that are doing well and lean into it.
If the data shows a slight pivot is needed, then pivot.
If things aren’t working right now, what do you have to lose if you need to change?
3. Build a Podcast Network
I recommend everyone to build a network with people on a similar mission.
They understand the vision and can unblock you when needed. You can bounce ideas off one another and help with introductions to guests.
It also keeps you accountable to double down on good momentum.
I’ve been lucky to work closely with Colin Campbell and David McIntosh over the past couple of years. These dudes have smashed it.
4. Understand The Bigger Picture
At the beginning of every call with a prospect, I ask one question:
“What’s the goal of your podcast?”
For everyone, it’s different:
- Become an industry leader
- Time away from work
- Network with others
- Sell info products
- Drive more leads
Whatever your ‘thing’ is, check are you moving towards or away from that goal.
If you’re moving towards the goal, keep going.
If you’re moving away, a few minor tweaks with your content and you’ll be on your way.
That’s all for this week's internet friends.
See you next week.
